Do I Also Need To File A UK Tax Return?

If you're a US citizen living in the UK, the answer is often — yes.

For many US citizens in the UK, filing a UK Self Assessment return is just as important as meeting IRS rules. If you are self-employed, earning rental income, receiving dividends, or making money overseas, you may need to file — even if you already pay through PAYE.

At Jungle Tax, our US and UK Tax Accountants assess your UK tax position and prepare your Self Assessment. We coordinate your US and UK filings to prevent double taxation by applying treaties and foreign tax credits.

We handle both US and UK taxes under one roof — removing the need to juggle multiple firms and delivering a complete, stress-free expat tax solution.

Questions & Answers

Yes. US citizens and Green Card holders must file US federal tax returns annually regardless of where they live. This is based on citizenship, not residency. You may also need to file FBAR and FATCA reports for foreign accounts.

The US-UK tax treaty helps prevent double taxation. Foreign Tax Credits allow you to offset UK taxes paid against your US liability. Proper planning ensures you don't pay more than necessary in either jurisdiction.

FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) is required if your foreign financial accounts exceed $10,000 at any point during the year. This includes UK bank accounts, pensions, and investment accounts. Penalties for non-filing can be severe.

UK pensions can be complex for US taxpayers. ISAs are not recognized as tax-advantaged by the IRS. UK workplace pensions may require annual reporting. We help structure your retirement savings to minimize cross-border tax issues.

UK rental income must be reported on both your UK Self Assessment and US tax return. You can claim Foreign Tax Credits for UK tax paid, but timing differences and exchange rate calculations require careful handling.

US tax returns are due April 15 (with automatic extension to June 15 for overseas filers). UK Self Assessment is due January 31. We coordinate both filings to ensure you meet all deadlines and optimize your overall position.
